StroMiké is part of the first Straw-k’Art edition and is a mix between Mickey Mouse and the prodigious electro singer Stromaé. The piece is made of 3 combined parts: an authentic baroque frame customized in the back with red lasercut Plexiglass, a transparent lasercut Plexiglass where the Straw-k piece is inserted and finally the StroMiké itself dripping of the frame. The diptych is made of 60 000 straws (transparent, green, yellow, orange and pink), two transparent plexiglass boxes, cut following the shape of the sculptures. Each part measures 120x80x30 cm. The piece is unique and can be seen from different points of view as the boxes are transparent: like a bas-relief while facing it, like wavy sculptures from the sides. The pattern reveals sound waves transforming into the New-York skyline, mixed to the funny effects of distorting mirrors.

Our first 1:1 scale installation at the Ecole Spéciale d’Architecture of Paris was made of 250,000 straws. Spread across the bleachers of the main hall, we created a functional topography where visitors could sit, lie, walk, hide, etc. Like a second skin, Straw-k was able to reflect the black and white rigid color distribution of the hall while molded into an organic pattern, offering a unique ephemeral atmosphere to the hall. The equivalent of 12 sqm of Straw-k matter was pre-fabricated in 28 pieces and assembled on site in 2 days.

As part of the 4 finalists of the international TEX-FAB Plasticity competition in 2014, we won a budget to manufacture a big Straw-k prototype to be exhibited during ACADIA 2014 in Los Angeles. The Viscoplasty prototype shows exactly what the fabrication process should be for an architectural scale installation. Using digital fabrication tool (CNC milling machine and lasercut), the mold is the base of the prototype and enable a perfect control of the assembling process by giving the shape the robot has to follow to melt the topographic surface. We used small diameter straws and varied the length of the tubes because the scale of the prototype allowed us to. The wavy shape shows how much curvature the assembling process can handle while still holding itself without extra support.
